Youth Scholarship May 17, 2006 - 02:02 AM
A very good morning to all of you.My name is Ishwarchandra from India.I am 26 years of age and HIV positive youth.
It seems like International AIDS conference is accomodating less youth for taking part. For awarding scholarship to youth participants,IAC should have seperate youth scholarship committee so as to make sure that youth are getting the equal rights for making decision.I know that some people are going to think that youth are conference hopper and not capable of making decision.I may or may not be able to participate at the conference because my scholarship result is unsuccessful.Since the beginning I was hoping to participate at the conference but now it seems like my wish is not going to fulfill. It doesn't matter I have been selected or not.Poor youth from poor country will definitely disappointed.I don't think I will be able to raise fund in my home town where law and order situation is extremely bad.Besides,I don't know from where to seek sponsorship to attend the prestigious conference.I have been working in the field of HIV/AIDS since last seven years and never got an oppurtunity to attend International AIDS Conference.I think the need of the hour now is to empower youth in any decision making process. All this thing may be little inappropiate with the discussion but I would like those youth who are going to attend conference to fight and raise lot of issue for equal partcipation in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
I agree with the notion that more youth participation should be encouraged at the conference.
The problem with any conference organizing committees would be to make two ends meet at the end of the conference. Most of the international conferences do not provide scholarships. Similarly, it would not be sustainable for any program to continue if scholarship is awarded to people just because they need it to participate or people who wish to put forward their demands. Scholarships are always merit-based.
In my personal opinion, and as far as my little experience goes, scholarships are preferably awarded to research presenters and event participants. Even an oral presenter is given preference over poster presenters in general at most of the conferences.
Keeping this in mind, it is most prudent for any youth to start arranging for funding even before submitting the abstract for the conference or making any plans to attend. XVI IAC is very generous, however, any scholarship application anywhere should be counted as turned down until offered otherwies and various funding sources must be researched simultaneously.
.I have read your mail say about 7 times and just decided to keep quiet cos i understand what you are going through. It goes beyond that for some of us who have laboured so hard to get our delegates registered and get sponsorship only to be refused visa for rather irrelevant issues. Well what is the essence of having to go through the gruelsome process of registering and wasting ones time to be there. I am speaking on behalf of my staffs here who regardless of their valid UK and US visas have had to comprehend with such.We are from a developing country where every little penny counts,i.e bank charges, courier charges, transportation and energy. Maybe we could talk better about our problems by staying at home. I am reviewing if it is worth being in toronto when the likes of people like you who feel the issues to be discussed in reality are not there.
The international organisation has done well by give some youth scholarship to attend the conference but they should as well fellow it up till the youth get the scholarship and visa a reality because in some country young people are not taking serious deal to reason know by them.
The participantion of youth should be well encourage in all aspect of life to make them good citizen in their own country.
The issue of reproductive health affect and infect young people most and the problem will best address by involveing them in combat the fight against the HIV/AIDS .
In response to the comment regarding VISAS to Canada:
If you are having difficulties receiving a visa for Canada please note that the AIDS 2006 has a team who is in direct connect with Citizenship and Immigration Canada. They are able to provide support around strengthening applications and advocating for conference delegates who are turned down.
If you have a visa problem, please contact them at visa-borderentry@aids2006toronto.org.
They should provide the visa people their registration confirmation number and be specific about the problem they're having.
Hi Ishwarchandra Haobam, in response to your message, this International AIDS Conference actually provided 384 youth scholarships. This is over 3 times the amount from the Bangkok Conference 2 years ago. Young people have also been involved in many of the Conference planning committees and there are youth staff in the Toronto and Geneva Secretariats.
Although I do aggree that it is very hard to get the international community engaged with youth, I think we have adone a pretty good job with this conference.
