Help Please
May 23, 2006 @ 11:31 AM

Hi, I am Alexandra Govere. I am a dual citizen of USA and Zimbabwe. My grandmother is from Canada. She is a Metis person, part Acadian and part Mi'Kmaq Indian. I live in Zimbabwe and currently I am a student at Stanford University. My sister is 15 I am 18. We started a project about 6 years ago that assists youth affected/infected with HIV/AIDS and we educate youth around the world about HIV/AIDS. We started it after seeing so many youth in our village become orphans to AIDS. I have been a member of TIG for many years and many TIG members are members of my project. Our project was accepted for presentation at the conference. The problem being of course finances. I tried to get a scholarship, so is did my sister and we were both denied. We were then offered a reduction for the conference fee, but as it turned out, it was not a reduction. I was then told well "We apologies that this special promotion does not work to your favor, however, youth and students are already offered a significantly lower registration fee than ordinary delegates." I do not think it is right that adults, who can better afford to attend this conference are given a reduction of fees, and youth are not. How can we be told we are to have a reduced rate and then it is not given to us? Is this right? Have any other youth had this problem? How can we solve this problem? Can other members of this forum/TIG advocate for our behalf? Would that do any good?
