[Poll] Training Experiences
July 24, 2006 @ 06:25 PM

Hi, I am Rayonne from Georgetown, Guyana. Just would like to know what training sessions will be in place that i can learn from and share with my comrades at home after my return. I am very passionate of creating live performances promoting living positively and loving people with HIV/AIDS. What new, dynamic and innovative experiences can i grasp through training seminars and workshops that would address my interest. Peace and Love.

Dear Rayonne,

Thank you for your question. It’s great to hear about your interests. Although many of the sessions in the International AIDS Conference involve ‘sit and listen’ to the presenters, there are great learning opportunities through the skill building workshops. During these workshops, “conference delegates have the opportunity to put learning into action. The workshops will use interactive, creative training methods on subjects of critical importance to those facing the realities of the AIDS pandemic today – whether they are a medical professional, researcher, politician, administrator, outreach worker, peer advocate, caregiver and/or a person living with HIV/AIDS.”

So which workshop should you attend? There actually are 100 skills building workshops on 81 different topics! I took a quick look at the program to see what might be interested for Rayonne who is interested in using live performances to promote HIV/AIDS issue. And I found that there is a workshop called Dance4Life: Fighting against AIDS by Dancing for Life, which will take place on Tuesday Aug. 15 at 14:15-17:45. You click on the session’s name in the program to see more information about it. (http://www.aids2006.org/PAG/PSession.aspx?SessionID=389)
Please remember that for any skill building workshops, the number of participants is limited on the first-come, first-serve basis. You should arrive at the workshop location 20 minutes before it starts.

I also found out that there is a session about using soccer game to teach HIV/AIDS prevention! This should be very interesting for youth in the football-crazy countries.

This is just two suggestions for training opportunity, you can look through the programme for more sessions that you might want to attend. For other activities related to performing arts in HIV/AIDS, you can also drop by to see many theatres and dance group performance. For example,

Traditional Indian street theatre http://www.aids2006.org/PAG/PSession.aspx?SessionID=1010

Youth musical theatre production http://www.aids2006.org/PAG/PSession.aspx?SessionID=964

Puppet show

Just browse the conference programme. I’m sure there is something for everyone’s interests! big grin

Cheers
Napat
