WUSC Online Discussion - History of HIV/AIDS
August 12, 2006 @ 07:19 PM

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. The exact origin of HIV is still controversial. One of the more prominent theories is that HIV is derived from SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) which is found in monkeys, and that they virus mutated and jumped to humans due to the hunting of the animals.

First reported in New York City in 1982, there was a report of an outbreak of a rare form of cancer among gay men in New York and California, first referred to as the “gay cancer” but medically know as Kaposi Sarcoma. About the same time, Emergency Rooms in New York City began to see a rash of seemingly healthy young men presenting with fevers, flu like symptoms, and pneumonia. About a year later, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) link the illness to blood and coined the term AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). In that first year over 1600 cases are diagnosed with close to 700 deaths.

In 1983 scientists in France identified the HIV virus itself, and in 1985 the first HIV test was created. In 1987, AZT (zidovudine) became the first antiretroviral drug to be able to inhibit the replication of the virus.

Partly due to mobility of humans via airplanes and new traveling technology, HIV has spread all over the world.

Many HIV infected people don't realize they are infected, resulting in the infection of others, and adding to the spread of the disease.

As of 2006, there are approximately 40 million people currently infected with HIV. 25 million of those people are in sub Sahara Africa. There are estimates of 20,000,000 new infections over the next 5 years.

What other aspects of the record of HIV should be included in a historical account of the virus?
