WUSC Online Discussion - The Pros & Cons of ARVs
August 13, 2006 - 04:39 PM

ARVs give hope to those infected with HIV because they prolong life. I guess almost the majority of the people can agree with the statement to some level. Nevertheless, in some developing countries like my own Botswana; one can only wonder if at all they do more harm than good. In the case of remote areas of Botswana there is still a problem of access to ARV treatment. People are forced to walk long distances to get their medication. On top of all that, sometimes the ARVs take long to arrive at the clinics and that means at times people do not get their medication on time. As much as I acknowledge the good impact of ARVs in the fight against HIV/AIDs, at times the lack of resources available to ensure on time delivery of the medication and universal access by all poses a big threat to those already enrolled in the ARV program. In addition to all the above frustrations some of the youth face, it is even more frustrating to find that in some other neighboring countries medication for HIV/AIDS is too costly for everyone to afford. What ever happened to free access to medical resources?

What do you think?
